Music & Choir

Scripture is full of references to music. The psalms, in particular, have long functioned as a hymn book for people of faith. Whether our voices are professional or untrained, whether we read music or play an instrument or not — or are young or have been around a while — we should make our joyful noises, offering our best to God.

At St. Stephen’s, music is an essential part of worship. Instrumentalists and singers who serve in the music ministry—both professional and volunteer—function as cantors who help the people of God sing. We are all amateurs: enthusiastic lovers of music, and musical lovers of God.

Our musical presentations and the congregation’s active listening and response to them in worship are sacramental offerings to God, expressing both the transcendence and the presence of God among us.

Our Music Program

In addition to our Sunday services, our musical ensembles participate in special services and events including choral evensong, the Christmas pageant and candlelight services, the Great Easter Vigil, and our Evensongs. The music we sing and play includes traditional well-loved hymns and anthems as well as contemporary songs and less familiar works. Regardless of background, we all share a passion for music and worship and look forward to sharing that passion with you. There’s always room for new members.
