Outreach Ministry

St Stephen’s Service Outreach projects allow parishioners to serve our larger community in one of three ways:

  • Monetary Appeal: Bring attention to a local agency and take an offering to support their work.

  • Hands-on work project: Participants sign up to work together for a charity.

  • In-kind Goods Collection: Parishioners purchase items and St Stephen’s delivers them for distribution.

1

June-July 2023: Backpack Project

During the summer we collect filled backpacks and donations toward backpack purchases. New backpacks are filled with a variety of age-appropriate back-to-school supplies for distribution to K-12 students in client families by Monument Crisis Center.

2

April-May 2023 – Mother’s Day is Babies Day

This year’s toiletries drive was extended to also collect diapers, formula, and gently-used items for distribution by Bay Area Crisis Center. Preschool families and our church youth group supported this project.

3

February-March 2023 – Lenten Food Drive

To raise awareness of homelessness and food insecurity in our area, we collected foods with a focus on prepackaged convenience foods suitable for unhoused clients served by Monument Crisis Center. Foods were donated also by Scout Troop 303.

4

January 2023-Winter Nights

St Stephen’s parishioners staffed and provided food and supplies for the Winter Nights rotating shelter during their stay at St. John Vianney church in Walnut Creek.

5

Monthly Food Bank Work Sessions

St Stephen’s parishioners lent a hand during monthly sessions at the Food Bank, working alongside volunteers from Orinda Rotary Club. Interesting side note: a discussion between our parishioners and an Orinda Rotarian led to his group from Moraga Valley Presbyterian serving dinner during our
Winter Nights Week.

November – December 2022: Holiday Food Box

More than just one meal, this list of nonperishable groceries and a grocery gift card provides a family several meals during Christmastime. Boxes were distributed by Monument Crisis Center.

7

October – November 2022: Thanksgiving Trimmings Bags

This annual appeal for non-perishable foods was “adopted” by the Youth Group. They collected foods to provide a traditional holiday meal, for distribution through Monument Crisis Center.

8

September 2022: St Francis Pets’ Project

During September we received donations of pet food and pet care items, for distribution through the AniMeals program at the Contra Costa Humane Society.

9

August 2022: Kids’ Books Drive

During August, St Stephen’s partnered with Orinda Books to purchase new
books, fiction and non-fiction kids’ favorites, for distribution to preschool through grade 12 students by Monument Crisis Center.

10

June-July 2022: Backpack Project

During the summer we collected filled backpacks and donations toward
backpack purchases. These back-to-school supplies were distributed to K-12 students in client families by Monument Crisis Center.

11

May 2022: Mothers’ Day is Babies Day

Parishioners prepared small bags of toiletries and baby care supplies, and purchased disposable diapers for distribution on Mothers’ Day through Monument Crisis Center.

12

March-April 2022: Ukraine Relief Appeal

Also during Lent, parishioners donated to support Episcopal Relief and
Development’s work for humanitarian relief in Ukraine.

13

March-April 2022: Four-Agency Lenten Appeal

During Lent, information was provided weekly about the following agencies serving people in our region: Trinity Center, Walnut Creek; Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties; Shelter, Inc; and Loaves and Fishes. Monies were raised to support the donor’s choice of one agency, or to be divided equally among the 4 agencies.

January 2022: Warm Welcome to Afghani Families

During Epiphany, St. Stephens Outreach Committee collected essentials for Afghani families arriving in Contra Costa County. We collected new warm coats and blankets, gift cards, and money to support refugee resettlement through the Noor Center in Concord.
