Youth Group

Middle and high school youth have the chance to gather most Sunday evenings during the school year. We always shoot for img_3390some combination of fun, formation, and fellowship and it’s a pretty good time for youth to have their run of the campus, and feel connected to St. Stephen’s in a way beyond Sunday morning (and without their parents!).

Middle school (6th – 8th grades) meets from 5:00-6:45pm
High school (9th – 12th grades) meets from 6:15-8:30pm
Both groups will share dinner together from 6:15-6:45pm

Sunday Suppers

img_2707Join us for a different way to gather and grow in faith. Sunday Suppers are a periodic Sunday evening gatherings that welcome people of all ages to participate in learning, practicing, pondering, and investigating spiritual teachings from our tradition. Sunday Suppers always include sharing a meal together, and may include games, crafts, activities, music, prayers, and other ways to deepen and enrich our faithful participation in the teachings and practices of our religion.

2016/17 Sunday Suppers run 5:00-7:00pm in the Parish Hall:
October 2 – St. Francis
October 30 – All Saints/All Souls
November 27 – Advent Wreath Making Festival
February 26 – Mardi Gras/Pancake Olympics
April 9 – Holy Week Sampler Platter
June 4 – Pentecost

Confirmation

confirmation_wwwConfirmation is a rite of Christian young adulthood for 10th – 12th graders to articulate their Christian faith and to make a commitment to livelong Christian practice and learning. There is a 12-14 week series of classes in the Spring that lead up to a June Confirmation date at Grace Cathedral with the Bishop and 100+ other confirmands from around the Bay Area. Taught by the Youth Minister and other clergy.

Acolytes

img_1752St. Stephen’s Acolytes are an outstanding group of young people (grades 4 through 12) that play an integral role in Sunday morning worship services and other special occasions.  Our Acolytes work in teams to assist clergy and the congregation throughout the service.  Acolytes have the opportunity to learn about the service and its many levels of meaning as they are involved in all aspects of the service including the Procession, the Gospel Reading, the Offertory, the Holy Eucharist and the Recession.   Please contact our acolyte director Jan Spieth with questions 284-2199.

Mission Trip

img_5260Our high school youth (finishing 9th – 12th grades) engage in hands-on service to others and deep fellowship with one another through an annual summertime Youth Mission Trip. Past Mission Trips have been to Alaska, Mississippi, Arizona, Wyoming, Washington, New York and Guatemala.

Middle school aged youth (finishing 6th – 8th grades) have the chance to participate in a local Bay Area week of service and learning—the Middle School Immersion Trip. We spend time on the first day and at night learning about community organizing, Christian practices, and social justice, and the rest of the week engaged in day-trips to different service projects and learning sites.

Diocesan Youth Events

img_1274There are a number of youth events around the diocese during the year for our youth to participate in. Every October, the diocese hosts the Official Youth Presence (OYP) to the diocesan convention. High schoolers can apply to participate in the legislative process of our annual convention and establish their voices as young leaders in the church. In February/March, the weekend long retreat HAPPENING takes over a church somewhere in the Bay Area (remember when St. Stephen’s hosted it last year?). Fifty+ high schoolers come together for what I can only describe as a church lock-in on steroids. And every summer, there is SUMMER CAMP. We love summer camp. There are camps for all ages, elementary, middle, and high schoolers, and inter-generational family camps, at the Bishop’s Ranch in Healdsburg and St. Dorothy’s Rest in Sebastopol. Camp is a huge, huge, super formative and sustaining experience for churchgoing youth and for many, is a spiritual tale they’ll tell for the rest of their lives.
