Music Ministry

Scripture is full of references to music. The psalms in particular have long functioned as a hymn book for people of faith. Bob Adams, our Minister of Music, particularly likes the idea of making a joyful noise to God (the organist part of him just wants to pull all the stops and let go!). Whether our voices are professional or untrained, whether we read music or play an instrument or not — or are young or have been around a while — we should make our joyful noises, offering our best to God.

At St. Stephen’s, music is an essential part of worship. Instrumentalists and singers who serve in the music ministry—both professional and volunteer—function as cantors who help the people of God sing. We are all amateurs: enthusiastic lovers of music, and musical lovers of God.

Our musical presentations and the congregation’s active listening and response to them in worship are sacramental offerings to God, expressing both the transcendence and the presence of God among us.  For more information about any of our music ministries, contact: Bob Adams, Minister of Music.

Our Music Program

In addition to our Sunday services, our musical ensembles participate in special services and events including choral evensong, the Christmas pageant and candlelight services, the Great Easter Vigil, and our annual Messiah Sing. Our program includes two ensembles for adults,

St. Stephen’s Choir and Westminster Chimes. The music we sing and play includes traditional well-loved hymns and anthems as well as contemporary songs and less familiar works. Regardless of background, we all share a passion for music and worship, and look forward to sharing that passion with you. There’s always room for new members.

St. Stephen’s Choir

This adult group sings classical choral music as well as gospel, spirituals, world music, and other contemporary music. The choir leads the 10 am service each week, and also presents music for special services and the annual Messiah Sing and spring concert.  Rehearsals are Thursdays 7:30 to 9 pm.

Westminster Chimes

Our adult handbell choir offers traditional and contemporary arrangements of hymns and songs, as well as original works written for bells and handchimes. The choir performs every six weeks. Rehearsals are Fridays 10 am to noon. Evening rehearsals will be held if desired.

Messiah Sing

Mark your calendars for Friday, December 2, 2011 at 7:30p.m. The Messiah Sing is free and everyone is welcome to attend. This is a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season! There will be a good will offering with 100% collected going to the Contra Costa Food Bank.
